If you are a cosmetologist and you are moving to Georgia or trying to become a cosmetologist there, you need to have Georgia Cosmetology License. How do you get a cosmetology license in Georgia?

There are three ways of getting a cosmetology license in Georgia.

1. Attend and graduate cosmetology and beauty school.

For this, you need to complete 1,500 hours over the course of nine months. After the graduation, you may take the PSI exam and apply for a cosmetology license. Depending on the school and the chosen program the fee may vary from $6000-$20000. Courses you take in cosmetology will go over the theory and practice of:

  • Hair Coloring
  • Hair Cutting
  • Nail Care
  • Makeup Application
  • Business & Retail Skills

2.You can work as a licensed apprentice.

For this, you need to be at least 17 years old and complete your training under the supervision of a licensed master, who has at least 3 years of experience. You need to complete 3000 hours and a minimum of 18 months of training.

3.Pass the PSI exam.

For this, you need to take the Master Cosmetology Exam. The exam consists of two parts: Master Cosmetology Practical Exam (140 minutes) and NIC Cosmetology Theory Exam (90 minutes). The first part cannot be taken online, this exam tests your clinical and practical skills by having you complete them in person. The second part can be taken online. The total fee for the exam is $109. The practical exam fee is $64; the theory exam fee is $45.

How much is a cosmetology license in Georgia?

The fee for the cosmetology license may vary from profession to profession.

Costs to renew a cosmetology license in Georgia

The Renewal Fee is $50, late Renewal Fee (within 6 months) is $100 and the price for the Application for Reinstatement is $200. Licenses for master cosmetologists in Georgia expire on March 31 on even number of years.

  • In order to renew your license, you will have to complete five hours of continuing education during each two years renewal period.
  • Three credit hours in Health and Safety
  • Two credit hours in any elective
